Bsg, also known as basigin and CD147, is a multifunctional protein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily. It is involved in cancer cell survival, mainly by controlling lactate transport through its interaction with monocarboxylate transporters such as MCT1 [1]. Bsg has been associated with various biological processes, and its abnormal expression is related to the development of certain diseases.
In acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), Bsg and MCT1 were overexpressed in most AML cell lines. Soluble Bsg was increased in AML patients compared to healthy controls, and high soluble Bsg was associated with worse overall survival, higher bone marrow blast percentage, and higher white blood cell count. Bsg SNPs were also associated with the overall survival of AML patients [1].
In multiple myeloma (MM), sCD147 (soluble form of Bsg) level was higher in MM patients, especially in those with more advanced disease, and high sCD147 was related to worse progression-free survival [2].
In lung adenocarcinoma, Bsg mRNA and protein levels were significantly over-expressed, and Bsg was related to advanced progression and poor prognosis by influencing cell viability, proliferation, and apoptosis [4].
In hepatocellular carcinoma, lncRNA BSG-AS1 can enhance the stability of Bsg mRNA, promoting the proliferation and migration of HCC cells, and the overexpression of lncRNA BSG-AS1 and Bsg are related to poor prognosis [3].
In conclusion, Bsg plays a crucial role in the survival and progression of cancer cells in multiple types of malignancies, including AML, MM, lung adenocarcinoma, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Understanding the function of Bsg through various research models helps in revealing the mechanisms of cancer development and may provide potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets for these diseases.
