Smtn, encoding smoothelin-A and smoothelin-B, is a gene related to cytoskeletal proteins in smooth muscle cells. Smoothelins are part of a protein family characterized by a single C-terminal type-2 calponin homology (CH) domain. They act as structural components of the contractile apparatus in smooth muscle cells, influencing the contractile potential of these cells [1].

Studies on Smtn-deficient mouse models have provided valuable insights. In mice lacking smoothelin-B (Smtn-B(-/-)), the contractile capacity of the saphenous and femoral arteries was strongly reduced, regardless of the contractile agonist. Paradoxically, this was accompanied by increased mean arterial pressure and concomitant cardiac hypertrophy [2].
