Serpind1, also known as heparin cofactor II, is a member of the serine protease inhibitor family. It is involved in modulating coagulation and can interact with glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) to enhance protease inhibition [3]. Some serpins utilize GAGs like heparin and heparan sulfate to achieve maximal protease inhibition, and Serpind1 is one of them [3].
In epithelial ovarian cancer, Serpind1 expression is significantly elevated. High Serpind1 expression is associated with poor prognosis. It promotes cancer cell proliferation, migration, invasion, G1-to-S phase transition, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition, while inhibiting apoptosis through promoting phosphorylation in the PI3K/AKT pathway [1].
In papillary thyroid carcinoma, Serpind1 was identified as a biomarker related to SUMOylation, with gene set enrichment analysis showing its involvement in immune-related pathways [2].
In glaucoma, Serpind1 is significantly upregulated and may play a vital role in glaucoma occurrences, associated with eye transparency decrease and glucose metabolism [4].
In systemic sclerosis-associated pulmonary hypertension, higher levels of Serpind1 were associated with better survival in patients [5].
In melanoma, proteins including Serpind1 in plasma-derived extracellular vesicles were identified as relevant in differentiating between disease stages [6].
In intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, Serpind1 expression levels were remarkably lower in patients compared to healthy pregnant controls, and it had a negative correlation with total bile acid [7].
In atherosclerosis, miR-155 induced by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons downregulates Serpind1, accelerating the development of arteriosclerosis [8].
In conclusion, Serpind1 is an important serine protease inhibitor involved in multiple biological processes and diseases. Its role in modulating coagulation through GAG-binding is well-established.
