Gstm1, glutathione S-transferase M1, is a gene encoding an enzyme responsible for the detoxification of substances harmful to the human body, such as air pollution, drugs, pesticides, and tobacco [1]. As part of the glutathione S-transferase family, it protects cells from oxidative stress and may also be involved in negatively regulating apoptosis-related signalling cascades through protein-protein interactions [3].
Regarding its association with diseases, some studies suggest that Gstm1 null genotype may not be associated with pre-eclampsia risk [2], renal cell carcinoma [4], basal and squamous cell carcinomas [5], or hypertension [6]. However, in Chinese populations, the Gstm1 null genotype is associated with an increased risk of lung cancer [7]. In Asians, the Gstm1 null genotype may be associated with a higher risk of oral cancer, and this effect may be modified by smoking status [8]. In Chinese and Indian populations, the Gstm1 null genotype is associated with the development of cervical cancer, and smoking modifies this association [9].
In conclusion, Gstm1 plays a crucial role in detoxification and potentially in apoptosis regulation. Studies on its null genotype across various ethnic groups have revealed associations with different diseases, such as lung, oral, and cervical cancers.
