SGCZ, or zeta-sarcoglycan gene, may be involved in multiple biological processes. Although its exact core function is yet to be comprehensively defined, studies across various organisms suggest its importance in different physiological and pathological contexts. It could potentially be part of pathways related to muscle-associated functions considering its relation to the sarcoglycan family, and may also be involved in processes like steroidogenesis as its host gene for miR-383 which affects estradiol release [5].
A study on myoclonus dystonia syndrome (MDS) screened SGCZ exons and intron/exon boundaries in patients suspected of having MDS but without SGCE mutations. No pathogenic SGCZ mutations were identified, indicating that SGCZ mutations are unlikely to contribute to the genetic heterogeneity in MDS [1]. A genome-wide association study found SGCZ to be associated with prediabetes status change, suggesting its role in diabetes-related processes [2]. In a study on abdominal fat deposition in chickens, SGCZ expression levels differed significantly between fat and lean broilers in abdominal fat tissue, indicating its possible role in fatness traits [3]. In young women with breast cancer, SGCZ ranked top for the recurrent copy number alteration (CNA) loss regions, and its expression level was significantly associated with survival outcome [4]. Also, SGCZ was among the genes associated with constant-severe pain in chronic pancreatitis patients, and it responds to antidepressant use, suggesting its relation to depression-related pain [6].
In summary, SGCZ appears to be involved in a variety of biological processes and disease conditions, including movement disorders, diabetes-related changes, fat deposition, breast cancer, and pain associated with chronic pancreatitis. Studies, though not using traditional KO/CKO mouse models in all cases, have provided insights into its potential functions in these areas, highlighting its significance in understanding these biological processes and diseases.
